Artist Statement
I am awed with the myriad moods and beauties of the South Texas landscape. For nearly twenty years, the visual preservation of this land’s mercurial countenance has been my primary focus and what motivates me. I avoid intentional realistic rendering, preferring to create imagined, yet archetypical, atmospheric landscapes that one can intrinsically recognize. I do not work from photographs or en plein air but from memory and by allowing a dialogue with the canvas to emerge. I encourage the memory of the land’s visual poetry to guide my expression. Ambiguity and gestural technique aid this.
